News and Notes From the MAC Gridiron

• For the first time since 1968, the Ohio football team won the Mid-American Conference Championship on Saturday, Dec. 7. Ohio defeated Miami 38-3, marking the largest margin of victory in a MAC Championship. It was also the first time a team had ever been held to no touchdowns in a Championship game. Additionally, this was Ohio’s first-ever MAC Football Championship game title.

• Ohio’s Parker Navarro was named the Offensive Player of the Game as the quarterback ended the afternoon 20-of-27 in the air for 235 yards and two touchdowns. He also collected 73 yards and the two touchdowns on the ground. Bradley Weaver earned the Defensive Player of the Game honor for his contributions as well, which included a tackle for a loss of four yards. Gianni Spetic was named the Special Teams Player of the Game after connecting on a 52-yard field goal as well as five PATs.

• The Mid-American Conference announced the All-MAC Teams & Specialty Award selections for the 2024 football season the awards were voted on by the league’s 12 head coaches.

Bowling Green's tight end Harold Fannin Jr. earned the 43rd Vern Smith Leadership Award as the top player in the MAC as well as the Offensive Player of the Year.

Ohio Bobcats’ Head Coach Tim Albin was selected as the Head Coach of the Year, while

Buffalo linebacker Shaun Dolac was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Year.

Ball State kick returner Malcom Gillie was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Year while

Cardinals’ quarterback Kadin Semonza earned Freshman of the Year honors,

• The MAC has seven teams who accepted bowl bids following the 2024 regular season, the most since 2021. This marks the third-straight year and the ninth time since 2011 that the MAC has had six or more programs reach bowl eligibility. Additionally, this also marks the 16th time in MAC history that five or more programs have become bowl eligible in a single season

Seven MAC school accept bowl bids

Western Michigan (IS4S Salute to Veterans Bowl), Ohio (StaffDNA Cure Bowl), NIU (Famous Idaho Potato Bowl), Toledo (GameAbove Sports Bowl), Bowling Green (68 Ventures Bowl), Miami (Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl) and Buffalo (Bahamas Bowl) will represent the MAC in bowl games this season.

This marks the ninth time in MAC history to have six or more programs receive a bowl invitation (2012, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024) in a single-season. This also marks the 15th time in MAC history to have five or more programs receive a bowl invitation (2004, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024) in a single-season.

The Mid-American Conference announced today an updated 2024 football schedule with game times and television for the first three weeks of the regular season and midweek MACtion.

The 2024 conference season will kick off Saturday, September 21 with two contests as Central Michigan hosts Ball State, while Buffalo travels to Northern Illinois. The 28th MAC Football Championship game will be held on Saturday, December 7 (12 pm ET, ESPN) between the top two teams based on conference winning percentage. This will mark the 21st MAC Football Championship game at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions.
All remaining game times and television will be announced 12 days prior to the scheduled game. Games will air on ESPN networks (ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/ESPN+) and CBS Sports Network.

This marks the first integration of the new conference schedule format. This new model will allow for each team to face all 11 conference opponents home and away at least once during a three-year cycle. Additionally, the new format will incorporate protected opponents based on geographic location and rivalries and eliminates the MAC East and West Divisions.
